Go Coastal: Kayak Ozello
Tired of dodging boats and skis on Kings Bay on weekends?  Don't want to slalom with the tubes on
Rainbow or fight the crowds on Weeki Wachee?  Beat the crowds and Go Coastal with Aardvark's!  $45 per
person, reservations required.

While Crystal River and Kings Bay is a great place to see manatees in the winter, the atmosphere changes
in the summer.  Now, Instead of boats idling around looking for manatees, high speed watercraft dominate
the scenery. Personal watercraft, ski boats and high speed go fasts clog the water and make it dangerous
for man and manatees. Rainbow River and Weeki Wachee are also clogged.

What's a  better option if you just want to relax and enjoy the scenery away from the crowds? Ozello (named
after Ozello Bishop, an early settler) is a world all to itself.  Tucked away between Homosassa and Crystal
River, think Key West or Cedar Key pre-development, uncrowded and unspoiled.  And getting there is half
the fun. A 10 mile, paved country backroad, Ozello Trail (aka CR 494W) winds through the Crystal River
Preserve State Park and ends at the shore of the St. Martins Marsh Aquatic Preserve

The water is clear, shallow, and protected, perfect for kayaking.  Few boats due to the shallow nature of the
bottom.  Grass flats intersperse with mangrove islands and oyster bars.  Dolphins cruise for mullet (the
fish, not the haircut), manatees graze the seagrass meadows, and colonial wading birds nest on the keys.

After the trip, stop by Peck's Old Port Cove for blue crabs and a cold one, or the Island General Store for
some of the best local bbq.
